Thinking of how to talk to my parents about wanting to upgrade makes me anxious.

The last time i upgraded my laptop was in the UK - the one previous to the one i have now was a lemon, and really, never lasted more than a year between needing repairs. Athena's been a champ, for most part - other than the recent plastic fatigue related falling apart, she's never given any issues whatsoever.

I have two problems - a direct consequence of of my failure while studying in the UK is my mom's basically been extremely strict when it comes to IT related purchases - i can spend my entire allowance on junk food, or such stuff, but she gets upset when i save for hardware. I suppose the same argument i'd use for audio stuff for her comes in here tho - while skills are one thing, good gear means better results.

The second is that, well, most of the gear at home is older. Its a little hard to make a use case for a new laptop when i have an old one that 'works' and dad's laptop is the same age, and my brother's work laptop is older- and the laptop i want *is* not exactly a budget system - the x220 costs significantly more than my other option - the advantage being much better performance, and killer battery life. I'm likely to get the 'oh, but everyone else is on an older laptop'. There's a good chance there'll be a new model by the time i save up too, since i don't expect i can dip into long term savings, or get a loan/funding from parents for it - my estimate, in IDEAL conditions is a year.

I'm on this thing what, 8-12 hours a day?  The keys are worn SHINY. buttons break due to fatigue from use. Whatever i get is going to get used for all its worth. And then if it still runs, get used for all sorts of awesome shit. This laptop's got 3 OSes already ;p
