Geek's perfect xchat2 install for windows
Jun. 11th, 2011 01:56 pmWhich... is a hack, that has bits and pieces from 3 different versions of xchat... naturally. I THINK i can cut it down to two, but where's the fun in that? It does, however work fairly well, and repeatably.
This is a early draft. I will probably edit it to have links to the stuff i ganked off the silverex xchat to make things simpler.
I've been using silverex's build of xchat for years. In fact, most of the theme related bits of my perfect xchat build come from it. it has a few problems - it hasn't been updated in 2 years, so the perl and python plugins may work only with older versions - then I switched to xchat WDK - which is brilliant (and if you run silverex's xchat, its a simple matter of installing the WDK xchat, and most things should migrate over, since most of the fun stuff is in the local folder. You can then delete xchat-silverex. However, read the whole thing before you do, in case.
Prerequisites: 7zip - for extracting the exec plugin from the 'official' xchat 2
To download (and download them in this order)
Latest perl from strawberry perl - note down the version number. The xchat docs suggest activeperl, but strawberry perl is supposed to be simpler. This is optional, and is really needed for some of the scripts i prefer.
Python also optional, and not actually in use at the moment for anything. I've installed 2.7.1, but any recent 2.7.x release is a safe bet
Xchat-wdk - when installing make sure to pick the same perl version as the perl version you downloaded. i've also installed the winamp plugin
All this together should provide a working install
Advanced install
Here's when the ugly hackery takes place
For one Xchat-WDK lacks the theme switcher (or additional themes) from xchat-silverex and the option to do /exec
For themes, you can copy themes from another application with GTK, go to the install folder, and replace /etc/gtk-2.0 folder with the one in the theme folder. I'm using the aurora-midnight theme i ganked off silverex xchat, and the xchat2 black theme - unzip it into %APPDATA%\X-Chat 2 while its not running. There's a few other options and a better howto here. If you already have a silverex build install, your theme will be the same with both versions, and you don't need to do much to move things over
Scriptswise, you might want the exec plugin (if you have a silverex xchat install, you can gank it from there, else download, and unzip the standard build using 7zip, and use the plugin in it). In my case, i ganked the standard version's plugin
While i have the winamp plug in installed, i use foobar2k, and as such i need a plugin in foobar2k to talk to xchat. It works well.
I also have a sysinfo plugin in perl that works well enough. At some point, i may switch to a wmic based plugin.
