While my dad has a tendancy for leaving DIY projects unfinished, apparently my grandad was a great DIYer... so occationally i have this urge to build things.. so I have. This is actually my second headphone stand - i moved away from the 'catapult' design of the old one to a simpler, heftier and more elegant design. For those who geek out over materials, i used about 2/3 of a single 450mm long by 25mm by 25mm slotted baton of Alniphyllum Fortunii, with a 10mm by 10mm by 6mm MDF for the base, and random possibly 1/4 inch dowels for the inlay on either side of the horizontal crossbar. everything is held in place by 2 long screws. total cost was about 4 dollars in materials.
In terms of actually making it, i just cut the wood roughly to size, drilled pilot holes with a 3mm bit on a pin vice (well equivilent to that, my bit is permanent fixed to a screwdriver style handle) and screwed things tight. I had to countersink the hole at the base to have it flush (quite messily, with a gauge). The indent on top was done with a gauge, then filing things as flat as possible. Probably didn't take me for than 15 minutes. For something that was designed with eyeball MK1 and guesstimation for most part, it came out pretty good.
At some point i need to think about finishing and protectively coating it, but that comes later, since there's one more small detail i need to decide on.
